St. Paisios Monastery – get mental peace


Many people from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Serbia, Romania and Russia come to the renowned place called Monastery of St. Paisios where you will find the grave of St. Paisios. This monastery is situated in Souroti. You have to go around 28 kilometers from Thessaloniki towards east side.

What you will find

For the nuns of this monastery the spiritual leader is Saint Paisios who died in the year 1994. Since then on 11th or 12th July every year a vigil is arranged for the memory of the saint. Numerous believers of this saint come across into this place to be a part of this vigil. So, if you want to explore the vigil as a tourist you can come to this place around this time. However, you need to know about the dress codes of this place and the timings as well if you want to be a part of it.

His life

St. Paisios was born on 25th July, 1924. He completed his education and worked as a carpenter first. He also delivered his service as a radio operator. Finally retiring from Military service he became a monk. In 1958 he went to Stomito to help the faithful against the torture of the Protestants. He again returned in Mt. Athos in 1964 again. In 1966 he went through an operation in which great amount of blood was required which was arranged by the nuns. After he got his life back he supported these nuns and built the monestary.

What are the attractions?

The main attraction of this place is the grave of St. Paisios. You can venerate over here. The peaceful ambience of the whole place is going to give you a lot of pleasure. You can also roam around the gardens of this monastery. You can participate in the prayer. You will see people waiting patiently to deliver their prayer. You can also go to the temple of Saint Arsenios which is just 10 minutes away from this place.

Appropriate clothing

If you want to enter into this monastery you need to know about the dresses you have to avoid. For the women backless or sleeveless dresses are not allowed. You can’t come inside the monastery wearing short skirts or trousers. For women they have to wear long and wide skirts which will be below the knee for going into the monastery.

Even for the boys also the sleeveless shirts or the shorts are not allowed. Even in case of children the same rules and regulations are applicable.

Opening time of the Monastery

The monastery is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday at the time of winter. In winter if you want to visit this place on Saturday you have to go from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Sundays in winter the opening time of the convent is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 4p.m. to 6 p.m.

In summer the monastery is open on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturdays it is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Sundays in summer the timings are same. However, in case of holy week or the clean week the convent is going to be closed.
